December 02, 2013 - HOLIDAY STREETWISE SAFETY TIPS

During the Holiday Season, thinking about your safety while shopping, running errands, traveling, or enjoying leisure activities is especially important. Let’s start by asking ourselves some important questions, such as:

  1. Do I occupy my mind with problems or worries while I’m walking, driving, or riding the bus?
  2. Do I carry a lot of credit cards, cash, or checks while out and about?
  3. Do I carry my social security card or Medicare card in my wallet or purse while shopping?
  4. Do I keep my car doors unlocked while parked, even for a short period of time?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there are several steps you can take to prevent an undesirable situation from happening to you during the Holidays. Here are some tips to help keep you safe during this season:

  1. Stay alert to your surroundings. Walk confidently, with your head held high. Know who’s around you and make eye contact with everyone you pass by. Make sure they keep their distance.
  2. If you’re approaching your parked car or the entrance door to your home, hold one key securely between your thumb and index finger in case your need quick access to the interior of the car or home. It can also be used as a self defense option if necessary.
  3. Carry only one credit card, a small amount of cash, or only one check if you know where you’re shopping. DON’T CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD OR MEDICARE CARD IN YOUR WALLET. You don’t need to carry them with you at all times. Instead, keep these cards locked in your safe at home, and only take your medicare card out when you need it.
  4. Always lock your car doors while driving and when you’re parked, even in your own driveway. It may help prevent theft from your motor vehicle.

By practicing these few safety tips, you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime. Stay alert, and stay safe.
