NPD Announces plans for 31st Annual "NATIONAL NIGHT OUT"

On Tuesday, August 5th, neighborhoods throughout Nashua are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Nashua Police Department, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, and the Nashua Police Athletic League, will involve over 15,325 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

In all, over 37.1 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. NNO is being supported locally and nationally in part by TARGET stores. Nashua’s two Target stores are a sponsor for the evening and will have a number of staff on hand to assist with the evening program.

National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and working with their local law enforcement agencies.

From 5:30 to 8 p.m. on August 5th, residents from neighborhoods throughout Nashua are invited to join with members of the community neighborhood watch groups, city officials and departments to take part in numerous events, including a family swim, and information work-shops at the Boys and Girls Club at 47 Grand Avenue.

Events will include live entertainment, face painting, family activities, games, information on safe neighborhoods and speak with members of Nashua’s GREAT anti-gang program. The event is free and open to everyone.

ALERT: IRS PHONE SCAM

The Nashua Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam where callers are portraying themselves as employees of the Internal Revenue Service and demanding money. These schemes are set up similar to callers identifying themselves as members of police departments or hospitals in which the intended victim is advised that a family member is either under arrest or in need of medical attention and payment is immediately needed.

In the most recent scheme, an elderly couple was contacted via phone and advised that they owed a certain amount of cash to the Internal Revenue Service. They were further advised that if payment was not received that they would face immediate arrest. The caller provided detailed instructions advising the victims to withdraw cash and to then purchase gift cards/green dot cards. An alert clerk at a local convenience store cautioned the elderly couple that the purchase of such a large number of gift cards/green dot cards was more than likely a scam. As a result, the elderly couple suffered no monetary loss.

Citizens are encouraged to contact the Nashua Police Department if they feel that they have been the victim of a similar type of scheme. The Nashua Police Department also encourages citizens to verify the identities of any individual or agency demanding cash via telephone or e-mail.

The Nashua Police Department can be contacted at 603-594-3500.
