Gov. Hassan declares State of Emergency -- "SMACKED"

On Thursday 8/14/14 Governor Hassan declared a State of Emergency specific to the “Smacked” brand of synthetic marijuana which is believed to be related to a number of overdoses in Manchester and Concord NH in the past 72 hours. Given this declaration the Nashua Police Department urges any store which carries synthetic marijuana to cease all sales and remove these items from your store shelves immediately. The Nashua Police Department also urges any member of the community that is aware of a store or market which is actively selling the “Smacked” brand of synthetic marijuana to call Nashua Police so the items can be quarantined in conjunction with Governor Hassan’s declaration. The Nashua Police Department is also actively checking the stores within Nashua and will remove any “Smacked” brand of synthetic marijuana relative to the Governor’s declaration. Even though the Governor’s order is specific to “Smacked” the Nashua Police Department would remind store owners that many of the synthetic marijuana as well as the “bath salt” products are continuously proven unsafe for human consumption and would request all stores and markets within Nashua to stop selling any of these products and remove them from store shelves. Store owners should also be aware that if they are found to be selling any federally banned substances they will be prosecuted.

ALERT: IRS PHONE SCAM

The Nashua Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam where callers are portraying themselves as employees of the Internal Revenue Service and demanding money. These schemes are set up similar to callers identifying themselves as members of police departments or hospitals in which the intended victim is advised that a family member is either under arrest or in need of medical attention and payment is immediately needed.

In the most recent scheme, an elderly couple was contacted via phone and advised that they owed a certain amount of cash to the Internal Revenue Service. They were further advised that if payment was not received that they would face immediate arrest. The caller provided detailed instructions advising the victims to withdraw cash and to then purchase gift cards/green dot cards. An alert clerk at a local convenience store cautioned the elderly couple that the purchase of such a large number of gift cards/green dot cards was more than likely a scam. As a result, the elderly couple suffered no monetary loss.

Citizens are encouraged to contact the Nashua Police Department if they feel that they have been the victim of a similar type of scheme. The Nashua Police Department also encourages citizens to verify the identities of any individual or agency demanding cash via telephone or e-mail.

The Nashua Police Department can be contacted at 603-594-3500.
